Finnish teachers competed with artificial intelligence innovations
The Finnish national broadcasting company Yle challenged teachers to design innovative teaching solutions using artificial intelligence in education. The winner of the competition, Katja Koponen-Andersson, combined virtual reality and artificial intelligence in vocational education, allowing students to practice demanding tasks that would otherwise be impossible to practice.
“There are so many professional tasks that cannot be properly taught in school: we can’t bring wind turbines, solar panels, and many other things to the classrooms. Not everyone can even visit all the places. This is one way to get to know these things better than just memorizing from the pages of a book,” says Koponen-Andersson.
Koponen-Andersson’s proposal offers students the opportunity to develop practical skills without safety risks and takes them a step closer to utilizing future technology in learning.
Here are some other ways in which teachers use artificial intelligence in education and in their teaching:
- Ideation and creativity enhancer: Artificial intelligence can, for example, create introductions for essays or projects.
- Versioning of learning materials: Artificial intelligence helps teachers to produce and customize teaching materials for different skill levels.
- Aid in assessment: As an actual assessment tool as well as a provider of feedback.
- Visualization and illustration: Artificial intelligence can be used to create visual materials such as images or presentations.
- Interactive and applied tasks: Artificial intelligence can be used in the design of applied tasks and in the implementation of different stages. An example is the development of a virtual escape game.
- Multilingualism and translation: Artificial intelligence is used for language translation and production of multilingual materials, supporting the understanding of students with different language backgrounds.
- Ethical reflection and critical thinking: AI triggers discussions on ethical issues and the need for critical thinking when considering the use of artificial intelligence and its effects
What is your own attitude towards AI, artificial intelligence? Have you tried it? This is a trending subject in the school world right now and we would love to hear how you are planning to utilize artificial intelligence in education!
